Who Was Abraham Lincoln?

     Abraham Lincoln (Hodgenville, February 12, 1809 - Washington, DC, April 15, 1865) was an American politician who served as the 16th President of the United States, a position he held from March 4, 1861 until his murder on April 15, 1865. Lincoln successfully led the country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the country's territorial integrity, abolishing slavery and strengthening national government.

     Raised in a needy family on the west border, Lincoln was self-taught, became a lawyer, leader of the Whig Party, Illinois state deputy during the 1830s, and a member of the House of Representatives for a term during the 1840s. After a series of debates in 1858, which reverberated across the country showing his opposition to slavery, Lincoln lost a Senate race to his archrival, Stephen A. Douglas.
