Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama aired on ABC network primetime. Its pilot episode was first broadcast on March 27, 2005 in the United States. The series focuses on the lives of internal surgeons, residents and attendants; and how they evolve in their profession when trying to maintain their patients' lives and in their personal relationships. The series title is a play on Gray's Anatomy, a renowned human anatomy book written by Henry Gray.
The original idea came from Shonda Rhimes, who besides being the creator is an executive producer, along with Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding and Allan Heinberg. Although it takes place at the fictional Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital (formerly Seattle Grace Mercy West) in Seattle, Washington, the recordings are made mainly in Los Angeles, California.
