The Greek Myth of Lion goes like this: A gigantic lion terrorized the population of the Nemean region, scaring and killing livestock and people. As the animal burrowed in a cave with two exits, it was very difficult to approach it. The hunters in the region asked King Eurystheus for help, as the animal had proved invulnerable to their weapons. The king sent Hercules on what would be his first job: to exterminate the Nemean Lion. The hero closed one of the cave's exits, forcing the animal to leave it on the other side.
Hercules, who was waiting for him, gave him a violent blow with his club and, realizing that the animal had become dizzy, in quick action, mounted on him and strangled him to death. Hercules took to using the animal's tough, tough hide as a protective cover. To perpetuate his son's courage, Zeus turned the lion into a constellation.
