The film Mr. & Mrs. Smith opens with construction executive John and technology consultant Jane Smith answering questions during couples therapy. The couple have been together for "five or six" years, but the marriage is suffering to the point where they can't remember the last time they went out together. They tell the story of their first meeting in Bogota, Colombia, where they were both secretly on the run from Colombian authorities - since authorities were looking for tourists traveling alone after a recent robbery, the two claimed to be together to avoid being questioned.
They quickly fell in love and got married. John later declares that Jane "looked like Christmas morning" to him the day they met. In reality, John and Jane are the two skilled hired assassins working for different companies, they are the best in their field, each hiding their true professions from each other. The couple live in a suburban mansion and, to keep up appearances, socialize with their "conventionally" wealthy neighbors. In these cover stories, John and Jane balance their seemingly mundane marriages.
