The Green Mile is a 1999 American film, drama, police and fantasy, directed and scripted by Frank Darabont, based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, released in 1996. The film is narrated in flash-back and starring Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb and Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey, narrating the story of Paul and his life as a death row prison guard during the Great Depression and the supernatural events he witnessed.
The film received four Oscar nominations in the categories of Best Film, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Clarke Duncan, Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1999, in a nursing home in Louisiana, Paul Edgecomb starts to cry while watching the movie Top Hat, from the 1930s. His roommate, Elaine, is concerned, and Paul tells him that the film reminded him of the events of 1935 , which occurred during the Great Depression, when he was chief of the prison guard, in charge of death row.
